DAY 23

This is our last full week of class.
Well actually we have Friday off for "study day".
Like hell anyone's gonna study.

So we had a guest today in our manga class.
His name was Yoshimizu-sensei.
Honestly, if you didn't tell me, I would've never guessed he was a professor at TCA (Tokyo Communication Arts, another Jikei college).

Imagine Kevin.
Then slim him down, take away the glasses, make him look like a skateboarder, and add about 15-20 years.
That's the best way I can describe him since I didn't bring my camera (which kind of sucked).

He was a very funny guy and has TONS of character.
His English was pretty ok, but most of the time he had to turn to Professor Hall to translate so he could get his point across.
Pretty much what he did was give us a little background on himself and show us some of the works that he did.
He had been drawing manga for about 2 years now.
Lots of his works were very nicely drawn.

Then he took out a folder which contained his latest work, not yet published.
It was from a series that he was working on called Ryuko.
The artwork was absolutely fantastic.
It combined the major elements of action and film noir and put them onto all the pages.

After a long look at his stuff, he then turned it over to all of US.
He provided sheets of blank papers (the kind used for manga) and ink wells with fountain pens so we could try drawing like he did.
Before he did that, though, we all gathered around him sitting down and making a sample work.
It was freaken amazing to see a real manga artist at work
The pen seemed to just glide everywhere and mark all the right places.

So we all went to work.
About half of the group got paper with characters already lightly drawn so all they had to do was trace the image.

I didn't wanna trace, but I didn't really know how to draw either.

So I drew a stick figure.
The best stick figure in the world.
Charging his laser.

Even thought it was just a simple drawing, using the kinds of pens and tools that the manga artists use really felt liberating.  It was so smooth to use and made drawing really easy.  Er...easiER.

It was really nice having him.  He told us at the end of class that we were still young and we had many paths ahead of us.  It would be wise to go try as many things as possible.

After class, a bunch of people wanted to go to Shibuya to go to Nabezo, the all you can eat sukiyaki place.
I wasn't down and decided to go back.
I kind of wasn't feeling that great.
Plus, if the same sort of thing happened again where the place closed on us, being in Shibuya really isn't my thing.

So I went back to read and do work.

What I needed to do was 3 things.
1) Read a chapter of a book and summarize it for myself so I could present in class tomorrow.
2) Take that summary and write it in paragraph form for my professor (which was easy, provided that I did number 1).
3) Write a 2-3 page paper about a convenience store (I picked that topic).

First of all, for number 3, I had to also present it with some pictures, so I stopped by the convenience store here and took a couple.

I need 3 more, but I'll have to take those sometime before Thursday.

After I was done with that, I went to go eat at my favorite beef bowl place.

DE LOU SHUS.

I came back and tried to do numbers 1 and 2.  It wasn't really working out.
A couple of hours passed and I decided to go to Mos Burger to work.
Mos Burger here is like the equivalent of Starbucks back home, in the sense that you go there to do work, and maybe buy something.

Demetri tagged along.

So we both got a burger each.

And went to work.
But mostly it was just talking about stupid shit and not getting things done.
We stayed there for so long, we witnessed a full rotation of the people eating there and people actually WORKING there.
I think I was there for a good 2-3 hours.
We were there for so long we got hungry again and ordered another burger.

But I still didn't get everything done by the time we left.

So what I ended up doing was finish the paper in Eric's room (which proved to be just as distracting as being at Mos Burger).
But I got it done.
So now I only have to worry about the pictures.

And I can have a nice trip tomorrow (I have a surprise).
